She wanted to stop renting the tools
The client already received Visio and Project through Microsoft 365. She chose to replace those subscriptions with perpetual Visio Professional 2024 and Project Professional 2024 licences: one purchase for the 2024 releases instead of an ongoing charge for those two products.
The new keys arrived and the installers ran, but activation failed. The messages looked like a key problem. In reality, the PC was not a clean installation target: Microsoft 365 had already installed subscription editions of the same applications.
What the activation error really meant
The installer was seeing a licence architecture conflict, not a counterfeit or mistyped key. Subscription and perpetual editions can use the same Click-to-Run installation engine while expecting different products, update channels and entitlements.
Click-to-Run collision: the installed subscription products were already managing Visio and Project on the device.
Account entitlement: the signed-in Microsoft 365 account continued to identify the applications as subscription products.
Installer channel: a retail perpetual key must be paired with its matching retail product—not an LTSC volume build or a Microsoft 365 plan edition.
The choice came before the fix
The honest options were to keep the Microsoft 365 editions and return to subscription licensing, or remove those editions from this PC and create a clean path for the purchased 2024 products. The client chose the perpetual licences.

How we cleared the conflict
- 1Confirmed the installed Visio and Project editions, licence channels and account entitlements.
- 2Signed out and removed the subscription editions of Visio and Project selected for replacement.
- 3Used Microsoft's supported Office cleanup process to clear the conflicting Click-to-Run remnants.
- 4Restarted the PC before introducing either perpetual product.
- 5Installed the matching retail build of Visio Professional 2024 and activated its bound key.
- 6Installed and activated Project Professional 2024 as a separate product with its own matching key.
The result
Visio Professional 2024 and Project Professional 2024 activated with their matching perpetual keys. The subscription copies of those applications were removed, and the client accepted the trade-off: a fixed 2024 feature set without the recurring Visio and Project subscription cost.
